Progress

Here's a step in the right direction: I'm working on a project that's longer than 700 words.

I'm not ready to wrap my head around a full-fledged middle-grade novel yet, but I'm taking on a new challenge, a very short novel with an 11-year-old protagonist, a manuscript which I estimate will end up in the 15,000- to 16,000-word ballpark.

I've seen quite a few of this type of book in the New Books section of the library--I don't know if publishers are publishing more of them or if our library is just ordering more of them.

Either way, it is turning out to be quite fun, and it doesn't carry the emotional baggage for me that starting or revising a middle-grade novel does.

Go go go, dear one. Can't wait to hear more about it.

I am in one of those phases where nothing feels right or worth it or like I will ever be able to make it mean what I want to. These phases don't last, I know that, but it doesn't make me feel much better at the moment.

I hope you move through this phase quickly. I know what you mean.
